Recent research into the topic for the next exhibition brought be in a roundabout route to the discovery of Visual Editions – a London based publisher championing beautiful printed books. Bit of a weakness of mine, but I also feel they address a gap in the market between exquisitely illustrated children’s books and the visually unexciting (save for very few exceptions) ‘grown-up’ literature. Hence my love for the Moomins. And Alice in Wonderland.
Each publication has been approached in a different way, with collaborations ranging from Jonathan Safran Foer and APFEL, to Olafur Eliasson and Will Self. Below are a few examples of the attention to detail and graphical nature of the books already in print – my only worry would be, are they too beautiful to read?!
